Please note there has been a location change! The event will be held at the usual site on Obabika Lake, not on Wakimika as orginally planned.
Over the weekend of September 18th, 2009 Alex Mathias, an Ojibway Elder, will host his annual Changing of the Seasons Ceremony to celebrate the fall equinox on his traditional family territory in the Temagami region of Ontario.
This year's gathering will also be a reunion to mark the 20th anniversary of the Temagami Wilderness Society’s Red Squirrel Road blockade where Bob Rae, Premier of Ontario from 1990 to 1995, was arrested along with 340+ activists who were trying to stop the construction of a logging road from cutting deep into the heart of Temagami’s ancient pine forests.
On Saturday there will be a traditional Changing of the Seasons ceremony, guest speakers, a group meal and a chance for people to reconnect and share stories with fellow activists from the early (or recent!) days of the campaign. Sunday will be an open day for participants to gather with friends, paddle, or spend some quiet time on the lake enjoying Temagami’s remote wilderness.
All are welcome! Participants are expected to make their own way to Alex's cabin on Obabika Lake and to provide their own food and gear.
A minimum donation of $20 per adult is requested to help offset the costs of the event.
If you are interested in attending the event, please contact Amber Ellis at 416-599-0152 x11 /
